Wireless internet question?
July 21st, 2010
I am going to a Hotel and am taking my new laptop with me that has a wireless internet card and was going to try the wireless internet at the Hotel. I have heard from a friend that you do not want to do anything personal on there like online banking because someone may be able to tap into your information where the wireless internet is unsecured. Is this true or not and should I just stick to regular surfing and e-mail while on there?
Thanks!

It depends on your laptop’s security software and the software of the website you are connecting to. Most sites will be okay, but to be safe, you probably want to stay away from sites where you need to enter personal information (like credit card or social security numbers), and do not log into sites that contain such information.

yes, that is true unless you are using something that is encrypting you information but I am pretty sure that is not the case so I would advise against doing anything pertaining to personal information.

It depends on your paranoia level. Even the most secure connection can be broken into. (Even a wired connection can be monitored - there’s a military program to run computers in such a way that they can’t be spied upon - it’s not perfect yet.) If you like taking risks, do your banking from a hotel. I usually limit myself to email and web browsing in hotels, unless I’m on a secure VPN.

Just like any home wireless network, it is possible to view files and activity on almost any computer that is connected. Basically, a hotel wireless network is an extended home network. So, I would say that it is very possible that someone with the ability to tap into computers could very well do so to yours. I would not recommend doing anything personal as said before. ESPECIALLY, online banking, financial managing, or checking your work e-mail and/or instant-message.

Traditionally, wireless internet connections at hotels are not secure in that IF someone wanted to and IF they knew how and IF your computer was not set up securely then someone COULD catch on to what you are doing. Without the wireless network being secured there is always the risk that someone could eaves drop on what was being done.
At the last hotel I stayed at with wireless internet I didn’t even bother using it. The signal was so low (in this case) that I found it easier to use the wireless signal from the Starbucks accross the road. My computer recognized it, could connect to it and the signal was stronger. If I could sit in a hotel and get their signal then someone could sit in Starbucks and get the hotel’s signal.
Send emails, surf for porn or chat online all you want but I would suggest against doing anything with banking or credit cards while you are there. Most banks, at least the ones who are reputable, use SSL connections for their banking transactions which are supposed to stop someone from snooping in but if the internet connection is insecure it’s just one more level of insecurity to threaten your privacy and allow someone to break into the signal.

as a general rule you don’t really want to be doing anything secure over wireless unless you trust who you are connected to.
Although unlikely, it is possible for someone to come between you and the internet and give you the impression of being on a secure link when it is far from it.
If you are connected to the hotel’s wifi then it probably is safe.

The answer is Yes you can use the WiFi Wireless connection as long as you use your laptop, the Hotel wireless connection and a secured connection, via a recorded password. The password will alow you to go on-line at your bank, Etrade, Money Market funds , to transfer electronic funds. This password is only on your Laptop and can not be used on another unsecured line to open your accounts, that are protected by your password.
Your secret password and user name are coded and cannot be " hacked together. Hacking into someones Email is not like this the Email account is unsecured, if you know the Email address and then keep guessing to find the password. That is different.
With your laptop hooking up to a server and router, You log on to the secure site, Your bank, and then on your Laptop you enter the coded " Username", then click on a different firewall security window and enter your coded " Password". These two security checks are set up y you and both should be non-common numbers and letters. My friend set his User name up as his name backwards with his age at the end, and the password was the place he was born, spelled backwards with the year at the end. These " Usernames and Passwords ", would be hard to crack. They are secure to you, your laptop, both are Coded so if someone could pull both from your laptop they still only know certain letters or numbers. A word spelled backwards is very hard to hack and then use to open the Bank " LOG IN Windows".
I recomend you opening all accounts that you have on your Laptop that contain vital, personal indenties, code word, passwords, usernames, S.S. numbers and change all to the backwards letters and numbers. Do this before leaving the security of your WiFi, wireless connection. If you have a Password and Username that is ranked hard it would be the backwards letters and the numbers. This could be your name, the place you were born, your mother’s aiden name; all spelled backwards, plus a date, which could be your birth day, birth year, etc. You can figure out a Username and a Password that when coded would be almost impossible to hack and open.
Remember this goes for your Paypal account, If you go on-line to Ebay, while in the Hotel lobby doing a search or in your room and doing a search.
Most secure accounts have waht is called a Fraud Monitor, which is a computer account that is tagged on to your secured accounts. Let’s say someone is trying to get your two coded words/numbers from your banking, money market. PayPal, etc and they try several times and fail. The fail transaction is recorded , that person’s computer address is recorded, the Server and Internet connection is recorded so that the Fraud Monitor, computer program will print out a fraud aleart and send that message to your Email attached to your WiFi, wireless connection.
A word of advise, When you use an unsecured wireless connection you can be sure that there is someone trying to break the codes on your computer. Weither they succeed is tatally up to how you have the Username and Password coded and set up. I travel around the world and have two programs loaded on my Laptop that prevents Hacking coded security windows and If they are attempted I receive an aleart. Depending on what accounts and which banking, money markets funds you carry will depend on the alearts you will receive.
If unsure then call your banking, credit cards, Etrade, Stock exchange. Mutural Fund accounts and ask about secure/ unsecured lines on each of your accounts with " New Passwords and Usernames in Place" In the five years I have traveled abroad I have moved money, bought stocks and Mutual funds on my Laptop, and never had a problem. An username and password are your protection to that account.Always use the maximum amount of letters and numbers, if possible. An example would be "Mason", spelled backwards; coded as " nosam " , and then add your numbers like 010373. This password would be very hard to hack and even if it was attempted you would be alerted so you could shut down your laptop before both secured, coded words were hacked. If unsure, browse and surf and don’t use anything secured on an Unsecured wireless connection.
This is what I would do; Set up a very secure username and password for each account and then let her go where ever you want knowing you are secured and see if you receive an alert.
