Program for personal banking?

June 30th, 2009

What do people use to keep track of their personal banking? Such as what program or what type of ledgers if you do it by hand?

I’m starting to keep track of my new husbands and mine, and am wondering what the best thing out there to use is.

Thanks!

There are a number of financial programs available. If you bank online, check with your bank to see which programs are compatible. For example, many banks work with Quicken. With Quicken, you can directly download information from your bank account to your Quicken program. Microsoft Money is also one that is fairly common. You might go to Amazon.com and enter financial software in the search box. Then you can read about the different programs available, what their differences are, and which one best works for you.

depending how computer savvy your are there are a couple of options I know of:
my husband does our budget in excel. so if you know all the formulas for excel, you can set it up to add, subtract fields etc.
if note, quickbooks makes a checkbook program. it does the same thing as excel, but it has it set up for you already so you just enter amounts and descriptions.
    hope this helps!

Intuit’s Quicken and Microsoft’s Money Plus are two of the most widely used personal finance programs in the U.S.

We use Quicken to balance our checking, savings, and credit cards, but in the end that’s all we do with it. We don’t use it as a tool for anything else.

But it makes us sure that everything we charge or spend is really us and not somebody who got our credit card number.

I used Quicken and my husband used Microsoft Money. We stayed with Money as he knew it inside and out and it also does all our investments.

Way back before computers I just wrote it all in an accounting ledger and kept track of it that way. Much easier with a computer program.
