Does this help improve internet security or is it pointless?

May 31st, 2010

Ok i’ve been buying stuff online for well over 2.5 years or so. ive never had issues, never got my account information stolen or anything. I only visit reputable sites (yahoo, amazon, facebook, cnn, etc.) I have a pc with windows 7 and kaspersky internet security. when entering personal/banking info. on sites such as amazon, express, wal-mart etc would it be effective if used an onscreen keyboard during that. lets say i entered my credit card number using an on screen keyboard, can it be traced just as easy as my regular keyboard. (once again i never had security problems but am just curious)

There is a built in on screen keyboard in windows ….so not sure if this is what you mean,
but if so that will make no difference…..but if you mean the Virtual onscreen Keyboard in
Kaspersky internet security 2010 well that will make a difference…

This can be seen in the link below..

Basically, by using virtual keyboard, there will be no keystroke when keying in username and password as all been done with mouse click. This way, your password will not be recorded even if it’s infected with malicious software. If you have your KIS installed, it is advisable to use this feature everytime you log in into a website - any website.

So if you have this …most certainly use it for all sensitive information.

yes, it is alot safer, kaspersky I believe includes an on screen keyboard, yes, I would consider it if anything did in fact get through

Using the default ‘on screen keyboard’ (herein "V-K") may not be as beneficial as once thought, because of pixel location recording tactics. A standard ‘QWERTY’ keyboard will always have ASCII characters in the same relative position, making pointer location moderately easy.
A technique to thwart this would be to make your own keyboard layout, with a V-K ‘creator’.
Several are available, but a dandy freebie is "Click-n-Type" (see below) which has resident as well as portable versions.
    You’ll need the standard installer ( http://www.lakefolks.org/cnt/CNTzip.exe );
the ‘create your own’ package ( http://www.polital.com/cntd/ )
or the user created versions ( http://www.lakefolks.org/cnt/keyboards.htm )

Install the principal package, then either of the next customize packs, then establish several (5-6) keyboard ‘layout profiles’.
When logging in, select at random one of the profiles to use.

Note the portable version is stealthed, making a trace-back of passphrases more difficult.
Run "CCleaner" and "MRU Blaster" after each use for another layer of security.

Also of benefit may be the use of KeyScrambler Personal: encrypts your keystrokes at the kernel driver level to protect your information from keyloggers.
