Why do electronic banking transations only occur on business days?

October 16th, 2009

For example, in Australia if I transfer funds from my account to another persons account on a saturday, the person will not recieve them until the next business day (monday). Why is this the case do computers take the weekend off too?

All the country banking laws I’m familiar with require financial institutions to update depository accounts on business days. Holidays and nonbanking days are usually defined by regulation. That being said, the financial institution usually will not debit or credit an account unless it is a banking day but if they debit you on Saturday and credit the other person or other bank on Monday, they can use your funds over that period to invest. That’s called float and it is one of the big ways banks make money.

What college major would be prepare me for a career in investment banking, consulting, management…?

October 16th, 2009

I want to get a job in investment banking, consulting, management, or private equity.

What college major would best prepare me?

I think that any of the general business type of degrees would do well, especially if you can specialize in a finance/accounting type major. I got a BS in management with a emphasis in mkting, and then went back to a larger university for a MBA and the consulting companies swarmed us. So, grab the finance, economics, and accounting courses and you will be set.

I went more the management side, then did the IT side, and have been somewhat stuck in the IT side of consulting, and then got hired in full time at the company where I did Proj Mgmt work. Its a good gig, but in retrospect… I wish I had more insight to the financial components.

Truth be told. I don’t think it matters THAT much anymore as to what your undergrad studies are. Many top companies really do look for graduate degrees, so instead… I would consider some programs that run the BS to Masters combined programs.

Chase Bank users- how quick and accurate is the online banking?

October 16th, 2009

I currently bank at Fifth Third and am SO fed up with not seeing my deposits post for days.
Two weeks ago I overdrew for the first time in my life. And three days before that, on a Tuesday before 10am, I made a $2000 deposit. This makes my blood boil. Of course, they didn’t charge me a penalty, but I’m still so mad- if I had bounced a check or been declined at a store I would have been furious, to me that is embarassing.
It’s impossible for me to know how much money I have or get caught up with my check register when their online posting is so poor. I hate to rely on technology but if it worked correctly, it would make everything easier.
Chase Bank is the most convenient for me to switch to, but I need to know how they compare in this aspect before I make the change.
Thanks!

when u make a deposit it shows up online almost immidiately
but when you make a withdrawal it could take 1-3 days and they dont provide free checking ….without direct deposit .
But,
they are nice enough to reverse your overdraft fees if you have any and call them with a nice story .
i’ve been with them for years so i guess im content with them .
goodluck

Can I add an international bank account to my US PayPal account?

October 13th, 2009

Can I add an international bank account to my US PayPal account?

I also bank in Europe. Can I add this bank account as well? On PayPal it looks as if can only add USA bank accounts, since my PayPal is a USA PayPal account.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Yes. I think you can not add any other bank account except USbanks. I can give you a link that deals with Payapl & Ebay transactions through Paypal. PayPal is one of the most popular online money transfer systems widely used for online auctions, pay to surf programs, e-books and purchase of low value goods. It is now a part of the online auction website eBay. More details available at
